The shop

A contract shop, on purpose.

Plenty of embroidery businesses sell to whoever walks in. This one was built the other way round: capacity, artwork and finishing organised so that other decorators, distributors and uniform suppliers can hand over production and put their own name on the box. Retail is a small fraction of the work, and it always has been.

That shapes everything else. Blind-label shipping is a standing arrangement rather than a special request. Customer-supplied goods are the norm, not the exception. A sew-out swatch goes out before a production run because the person approving it is staking their own customer relationship on it.

The people who do the work

Nearly everyone in the building has been here five years or more, and several a great deal longer than that. In a trade where operators turn over constantly, that is the whole quality argument: the person hooping your garments has seen your fabric before, and the digitiser who fixes a sew-out is the one who drew it.

Four departments, one address

Digitising, embroidery, monogramming and cut-and-sew all happen at Bellbrook Avenue. Nothing is brokered out to a shop you have not vetted, which means a problem found on a Tuesday sew-out is a Tuesday conversation rather than a fortnight of email.

• Monogramming

  Per-piece personalisation, from dress shirt cuffs through wedding towels. Different discipline, different scheduling, same floor.

• ABC Sews™

  Cut-and-sew: tackle twill, appliqué, patches, flags, banners and drapery. Where a job needs fabric assembled rather than only decorated.

Manufacturing in the Miami Valley

Xenia sits just east of Dayton, in a part of Ohio that still makes things. Alphabet is a member of the Ohio Manufacturers’ Association and holds an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau serving Dayton and the Miami Valley.
